This Other Eden by Paul Harding PDF Overview

In this exciting book called “This Other Eden” by Paul Harding, something really interesting happens! There’s an island, far away from everything, and some important people visit it. They have a special job to do, like taking pictures and helping the people who live there. But there’s a teacher named Matthew Diamond, who wants to teach the islanders cool things like Latin and Shakespeare, but he also has some bad thoughts about people with different skin colors.

Storyline

The story takes place a long time ago in the United States when some people believed really wrong things about others because of their skin color. It was a time when some doctors even thought they could measure people’s bodies like they were just objects in a lab! Can you believe it?

There’s a part where someone in the group shows a little girl who has dark skin some pictures to see if she knows what they are. But even though Matthew Diamond has his mean thoughts, he gets mad at the group because they’re being rude to the little girl. He almost tells them that she’s really smart and can even answer their questions in a language called Latin!

It’s a really fascinating story that makes you think about how people should be treated and how everyone is smart and important, no matter what they look like.

In Paul Harding’s books, there are some really special moments that make you feel things deep inside. Sometimes, a character in the story becomes more than just a regular person. They show their true feelings and thoughts, and it makes them feel so real.

In one book called Tinkers, there’s an old man who wonders what will happen to him after he dies. He worries that he will only be remembered as stories and not as a real person by his family. It’s a sad thought, but it shows how important it is to be remembered.

In another book called Enon, there’s a dad who is really sad because his daughter passed away. He spends so much time by her grave that he starts to question if the place is even real or just pretend. It’s like he’s living in a make-believe world because of his grief.

But out of all of Harding’s books, I think This Other Eden is the best. You can choose any part of the story, and each sentence is full of meaning. They can stand on their own and make you feel something special. But when you read the whole book, it all fits together like a magical puzzle.

It’s amazing how an author can make you feel so many things with just words. Paul Harding has a special gift for writing, and it shines brightly in This Other Eden.

But there’s more to this story than just sad things that happened. The author, Harding, wants to create something really special and poetic. He’s not trying to tell the exact history of what happened on the island. Instead, he wants to show what it felt like to be alive there, in each and every moment.

The people in the story from New England are really interesting. They pay attention to things that are hard to understand completely. It’s like what the poet Emily Dickinson once said when you don’t really know something, but you also don’t know it. It’s a bit mysterious!

There’s a lady named Esther Honey who has had a tough life. She spends her days sitting in a rocking chair, smoking a special kind of plant called mugwort, and trying not to think about her scary dad. It’s not easy for her, but she keeps going.

Then there’s a man named Zachary Hand to God Proverbs, who is a carpenter. He lives inside a big tree, and he has spent so many years carving pictures from the Bible on the tree’s trunk. He used to dream of building something amazing like a cathedral, but now he feels scared to finish it.

And there’s another family called Theophilus and Candace Lark who live in a little shack near the Honeys. Their children are really sensitive to sunlight, so they can only come out at night when it’s dark outside.

It’s really interesting to learn about these different characters and how they live their lives. Even though there are sad and strange things happening, it’s also a story about hope and how people find ways to keep going.

In the story, the author, Harding, doesn’t say who is right or wrong. He doesn’t judge the people who caused the sad things to happen or the people who were affected by it. Sometimes, it’s hard to know who is really at fault.

There is a person called a court clerk who gives papers to the people on the island telling them they have to leave. He might think of them as bad people who shouldn’t be there. But later on, we also see him with his family. They don’t have a nice place to live either, and it’s probably because he has to do his job that they aren’t in the same situation as the people he gave the papers.

It’s important to remember that things can be complicated and not always clear. People might do things that seem mean, but there might be reasons behind their actions that we don’t know about. It’s a reminder to be understanding and not judge others too quickly.

The Plot

The story comes back around to the other books, Tinkers and Enon. This time, we meet Ethan Honey, who is Esther’s grandson and really good at painting. He goes to Enon, which is a town we already know from the earlier stories. But what’s really special about the characters in this book is how they pay attention to everything around them, especially nature. They feel like they belong in the natural world.

Ethan doesn’t worry so much about his skin being lighter than his family’s. Instead, he loves the beautiful light of summer afternoons on the east coast. His dad has a hard time talking about his feelings, but on Apple Island, we see moments when it’s like his mind becomes the night and the night becomes his mind. It’s a little bit mysterious and magical.

The book has really amazing descriptions that make you feel like you’re right there with the characters. Like when a big storm called a hurricane comes and it feels like a secret message being opened. Or when someone cuts down a pine tree in the forest, and the sound of it hitting the ground is like a powerful shock.

I’m so impressed with this book because the author, Harding, writes such beautiful sentences. They feel like they’re full of light and magic, like something angelic. It’s really something special!
