Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus PDF Overview

Every once in a while, a first book comes out with lots of excitement and gets big TV deals, and as you read the first chapter, you feel so happy because it really deserves all the attention. “Lessons in Chemistry,” written by Bonnie Garmus, who used to write ads, is just like that magical creature – a very well-done, funny, and interesting story. It has lots of research, but it doesn’t feel heavy, and the sentences are so beautifully written that it’s hard to believe it’s the author’s first book.

After The Queen’s Gambit and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel became really popular, more people started liking stories about brave women who were the first to do amazing things in fields mostly for men. This happened in the late 50s and early 60s, before the big wave of feminism. Elizabeth Zott, the main character in Lessons in Chemistry, is just like those strong women. The book also mentions Julia Child, who was a famous chef on TV and a trailblazer for women, and it even reminds us of Walter White from Breaking Bad with Elizabeth’s saying, “Chemistry is change.”

Storyline

When the story starts in 1961, Elizabeth is a 30-year-old single mom, and she’s not very happy about being the star of a cooking show called Supper at Six. Even though she’s really good at chemistry, her dream job, she faced a lot of troubles in her academic career. The reason goes back ten years before when we learn that people didn’t trust female scientists like her. Even in college, she had to deal with bad things happening to her and people treating her unfairly, just because she was a woman. Some really bad stuff, like being hurt and having her work stolen, happened to her. But also, in her everyday life, she had to deal with people being mean to her just because she was a woman trying to do things her way.

Then, when she met Calvin Evans, a brilliant chemist who was even nominated for a Nobel prize, they fell in love, but others were jealous and wanted to ruin their happiness. Their love story didn’t have a happy ending, unfortunately.

Even though Elizabeth takes the TV job to earn money after losing her job at the research institute, she starts a small revolution by using her show to talk to many housewives about making a difference. What’s really cool about the book is how funny it is even though some really bad things happen to Elizabeth. She’s like a character who doesn’t show her emotions much but lots of things go wrong for her. People judge her based on what others did, not on what she actually did. The funny part is that she stays true to herself, even when others try to change her to be like everyone else.

Conclusion

You know, even though this is a great first book, there are a few little things that some people might not like. Sometimes, the story jumps between different characters too much, but the best part is when we get to know what Elizabeth is thinking and feeling. Oh, and there’s this kind of magical part where Elizabeth’s super-smart dog tells us what he thinks, which some readers might love, but others might not be so obsessed about it.

But the best thing is that the author, Garmus, knows how important it is to have a good ending to the story. Sure, some parts might feel like they happen by chance, but that’s just because the whole world she made up is so exciting and colorful, like in the movies! It’s like the story is ready to be turned into a TV show or a movie, but the most fun part is how funny the writing is. The way Garmus writes with dry wit makes the book so enjoyable to read!
