In the book, Camonghne talks about things that happened when she was a kid that made her feel sad and scared. These things affected her mental health and made it hard for her to understand math. She talks about even more difficult things, too. It’s important to know that this book might bring up some tough feelings, so it’s good to make sure you’re feeling okay before reading it.
I want to mention some things that might be hard for some people to read about. It’s called trigger warnings. There are parts in the book where Camonghne talks about self-harm, panic attacks (when someone feels really scared all of a sudden), child abuse (when a child is hurt by someone they should trust), sexual abuse (when someone is hurt in a bad way by another person), suicide (when someone takes their own life), and abortion (when a woman ends a pregnancy). These are really serious things, and it’s important to be aware of them before reading the book.

I really, really liked how this book was written! It’s not like other books I’ve read before. It’s easy to understand and read. And guess what? I learned a whole bunch of new things while reading “Dyscalculia”!
In the book, the author talks about ADHD (which is when it’s hard to focus and pay attention), unbalanced depressive disorder (which is when a person’s moods go up and down a lot), and dyscalculia (which is when math is super hard to understand). It made me sad to see her struggle so much and not get the right help for a long time. But you know what? I think a lot of people can relate to that feeling, even me!
I felt a connection with the author when she talked about taking medicine. She described it in a way that I could understand. I’m really glad she was so open and honest about everything she went through and how she felt. Even though I’m not a person of color, I found other ways to relate to the story. When Felix wrote about feeling sad and worried all the time, having scary panic attacks, going through something really bad like sexual assault, taking medicine, and hurting themselves, I understood those feelings too.
I’m so happy that the author kept going to new therapists and trying different medicines. It gives people hope that one day, they will find the right medicine and get the right diagnosis for themselves too. It’s important to keep trying and never give up. Things can really get better, even when they seem tough right now. I want to say thank you to the author for sharing her story and telling us about her journey of healing.
